2026 Q3 Market Update: Rates, Equities, and What's Ahead

Written by Paul Jablansky, Chief Investment Officer | Oct 27, 2026, 4:12:58 PM

The third quarter of 2026 brought continued resilience in U.S. equity markets, even as rising interest rates, persistent inflation, and geopolitical uncertainty presented new challenges. While stock market gains moderated following a particularly strong second quarter, shifting economic conditions raised important questions about long-term investment returns and portfolio positioning.

Our Investment Team's latest 2026 Q3 Market Review examines these developments through charts, market data, and forward-looking analysis. Here are a few key takeaways.

U.S. equities remained resilient

Despite concerns surrounding inflation, rising interest rates, and geopolitical tensions, U.S. equities continued to post positive returns during the third quarter. However, performance varied significantly across sectors, with technology and energy companies contributing disproportionately to market gains.

While investor optimism remained strong, elevated valuations and concentrated market leadership continue to warrant attention.

Economic conditions remain relatively stable

Our Investment Team continues to anticipate a low probability of recession over the next 12 months, with its economic model projecting stable unemployment, moderating inflation, and relatively strong economic growth.

However, geopolitical uncertainty and elevated energy prices remain important considerations, particularly as higher transportation and consumer costs could place additional pressure on inflation.

Interest rates may remain elevated

Persistent inflation and a relatively stable labor market have contributed to expectations of additional Federal Reserve rate hikes before year-end.

Higher interest rates continue to influence fixed income markets, borrowing costs, and the housing market. At the same time, rising bond yields may present investors with opportunities to reassess the balance between equities and fixed income within their long-term investment strategies.

Long-term valuations deserve attention

Although equity markets have demonstrated resilience, our Investment Team remains cautious about elevated stock valuations and their potential implications for future returns.

With projected long-term equity returns approaching current investment-grade corporate bond yields, investors may benefit from revisiting their asset allocations and ensuring their investment strategies remain aligned with their financial goals and risk tolerance.

Looking ahead

As 2026 enters its final quarter, inflation, Federal Reserve policy, geopolitical developments, and market valuations will continue to shape the investment landscape.
